Energy: The ability to do things. The capacity to do work. A power supply or source.

This series focuses on the six kinds of energy we use to bring our dreams and vision into physical reality: time, physical vitality, creativity, enjoyment, relationship, and money.

We intuitively know that time is a form of energy. We can waste it, invest it, lose it, squander it, or focus it. Those are metaphors borrowed from energy. And we often have difficulty finding enough of it. In fact, one of the most common reasons for not doing something we would love to do is because we didn’t have the…….time.

I’ve noticed for the past few years that conversations about the absence of time are increasing dramatically. As we become busier and busier we begin to measure out our lives in minutes. Sometimes seconds.

Speaking of minutes, you have 1440 of them each day. Everyone who was ever successful, who attained their heart’s desires, has had that same 1440 minutes each day.

A client of mine, Jeanne,  had a dream that she thought was “blocked” because she didn’t have the time to do it. She wanted to write a book for children. To hear her talk about it, you’d think it was already written. She had the chapters outlined in her mind, along with the pictures she wanted to ask a friend to create for the book.

But what she thought she didn’t have was the time to do it. As an elementary school teacher she had a lot on her plate…and a bag full of reasons why the book project needed to be shelved yet another year.

If this resonates with you, then you might try what I suggested she do next. I had her write the number 1440, the number of minutes in a day. Then I asked her to write the number 10. Ten minutes is less than 1 percent of 1440. However, when you do something that brings you satisfaction for ten minutes a day, at the end of one year you’ll have done it for sixty hours. Sixty hours is a college course. It’s more than a workweek, at least for some of us.

I asked her what I’m asking you right now: what could you do with sixty hours just for yourself? For Jeanne it was clear: write a children’s book!

Jeanne scheduled ten minutes every day from 5:30 until 5:40, just after work, as well as on most weekends. Long story very short: she wrote a great rough draft of the book in six months. She’s looking for an agent now to take it to the next level.

But the most important part of this is : she’s very, very happy out of being highly intentional regarding a dream of hers, for a mere ten minutes a day. And that, I think, is what comes out of “governing the clock, not being governed by it” to quote Golda Meier above.

To quote Jeanne: “Now, when I’m having a difficult day at the elementary school, when children are sick and everything seems in chaos, I have only to think of those ten minutes I’m going to have at the end of the work day, and my body relaxes. I’m more present.”

Two questions for you:

▪   What can you do for ten minutes a day that would bring you closer to a dream such as learning a new language, painting a picture, writing a poem, planting a garden, or learning tai chi?

▪   Can you find ten minutes each day where you know you’re wasting time? Are you willing to stop spending that time in the same old way? If you’re like most of us, you really know the answer to this question. If not, keep looking. That’s because part of gaining mastery is to be willing to see where we are not being masterful!
